The Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol (R-TEP) and the Group Traumatic Episode Protocol (G-TEP) are innovative protocols that incorporate and enrich the existing EMDR Recent Event Protocol. Early in the processing of a recent trauma, when information is fragmented and not yet integrated, the adaptive information processing system allows for the event to become a memory that happened and not one that is still happening. However, when the system is compromised, this natural process may not occur and the trauma symptoms can remain acute. R-TEP, developed by Israeli psychologists, Elan Shapiro, PhD and Brurit Laub, MA, not only treats the acute distress of recent trauma; but may also be a means of working within an early window of opportunity for preventing complications such as PTSD and strengthening psychic resilience. R-TEP addresses the 8 phases of the EMDR standard protocol with necessary modifications required to to deal with the specific challenges of recent events, with special attention to resource development and strong closure at the end of each session.
G-TEP is Elan Shapiro's exciting and highly creative method that provides an approach to resolve recent traumatic distress using a group format. It has multiple uses including intervention in disasters, critical incidents, family therapy, small groups of unrelated individuals (as in workplace trauma), or in groups of individuals who have experienced different traumas (mixed adult group therapy). Presentations will include didactic material, video, closely supervised practica and detailed handouts.
Special Note: Although this is a 2 day workshop, participants who have already had a full day training in R-TEP may attend the G-TEP only. You may also opt to take R-TEP only, although we encourage you to take both sections in order to acquire the full spectrum of Early EMDR Intervention skills.
